Simon XO is a 24-year-old singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who combines explorative synths, tape loops, electric guitars, and an aggressive vocal to create his own version of indie goodness. Originally from San Diego, Simon XO started playing trombone at a young age and by thirteen was blasting it along to Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Wilco albums. Realizing the dichotomy between his trajectory as trombone player and his desire to be a indie artist, Simon XO began diving into the world of production to hone his craft.
After years of playing in various bands, Simon XO released an EP, Covering. It featured in-your-face drums and forceful synth productions that bend over backwards to reinforce folk-style lyrics of doubt, loved ones, and facing interpersonal fears. The combination worked, garnering press such as Music Connection Magazine’s Hot 100 Unsigned Artists, Celeb Mix, and EDM Sauce, as well as radio stations like DASH Radio and 103.9FM.
A year later, XO is back at it, but with a much different tilt. His sophomore effort, Nightmares & Such, was a process of breaking down all the noise that living in Los Angeles and trying to survive in the music industry can cause. “For the sake of self-preservation, these songs were an exercise in trying to block out those pressures, and make the weird art I want to make. I stopped listening to the radio or Top 40 playlists, and started relistening to all the influences that got me so obsessed with music in the first place.” The first single is due in early March, with the whole set slated for Fall of 2019.
